Illinois Speed Limits Explained

It is the driver's responsibility to know the posted speed limit, the Illinois State Police says. Here are the maximum speeds Illinois law sets by road type, the lower limit when you tow, the rule that you must still slow down for conditions, and how the ISP enforces speed, for drivers around Peoria.

The short answer

Illinois maximums are 70 mph on interstates outside urban areas, 65 mph on rural interstates, 55 mph on interstates near or in major cities and on other highways, and 30 mph in urban areas, unless signs post a different limit. Vehicles towing another vehicle are limited to 60 mph outside urban districts. Always drive the posted limit or slower when conditions call for it.

Illinois maximum speed limits by road type

The Illinois State Police lists these maximums, which apply unless some other speed restriction is established:

RoadMaximum speed
Interstate highways outside urban areas70 mph
Rural interstates65 mph
Interstate highways near or in major cities55 mph
Other highways55 mph
Urban areas30 mph

Lower limit when towing or driving a heavy vehicle

Outside an urban district, the maximum speed is 60 mph for any vehicle towing any other vehicle, the ISP says. The same 60 mph maximum covers house cars, campers, private living coaches, vehicles licensed as recreational vehicles, and second-division vehicles designed or used to carry a gross weight of 8,001 pounds or more.

If you pull a camper, boat or utility trailer behind your truck or SUV, plan your trip around that 60 mph maximum even where cars may legally go faster.

The reasonable-and-proper rule

No vehicle may be driven on any Illinois highway at a speed greater than is reasonable and proper with regard to traffic conditions and the use of the highway, or that endangers the safety of any person or property, the ISP says.

Staying under the maximum does not relieve you of the duty to slow down when approaching and crossing an intersection, going around a curve, approaching a hill crest, traveling a narrow or winding road, or when pedestrians, other traffic, weather or highway conditions create special hazards. Speed must be decreased as necessary to avoid colliding with any person or vehicle on or entering the highway.

How the Illinois State Police enforces speed

The ISP says it uses these methods to determine vehicle speed:

Radar

Hand-held radar and moving radar, which can clock vehicles approaching from the front or rear while the trooper drives.

Pacing

Keeping pace with another vehicle and reading the speedometer.

Laser

Laser speed measuring devices, which bounce laser light beams off a moving vehicle.

Photo and aircraft

Photo speed enforcement, and air speed measurement from the ISP's fleet of fixed-wing aircraft.

What the ISP says about speeding penalties

The Illinois State Police page describes bail and offense levels this way:

Speed over the posted limitWhat the ISP says
1 to 25 mph overBail of $164 under Supreme Court Rule 526, posted as cash, an approved bond certificate, or a signed Promise to Comply
26 to 34 mph overClass B misdemeanor; bail of 10% of $2,500 or $250, or the driver's current Illinois license; mandatory court appearance
35 mph or more overClass A misdemeanor; bail of 10% of $2,500 or $250, or the driver's current Illinois license; mandatory court appearance

From the Illinois State Police, "Speed Limit Enforcement," read October 28, 2026. The ISP adds that Class A and B misdemeanors are arrestable offenses, and describes the Sign and Drive law (625 ILCS 5/6-308), which generally lets cited drivers keep their license. Fines and court costs are set by the courts; this page is not legal advice.

Speed-safety tips from the ISP

The ISP's advice on avoiding a speed-related crash:

Obey the posted limit

Obey the posted speed limit on all roads, and reduce your speed when road conditions are less than ideal.

Go with the flow

Travel at the same pace as other traffic, staying within the speed limit. If most other vehicles are speeding, stay to the right.

Two seconds back

Follow at a distance of at least two seconds. At night and in other low-visibility conditions, reduce speed, increase your following distance and use your headlights.

Buckled, sober, maintained

Always wear your safety belt, never drink and drive, and maintain your vehicle and tires in safe working order.
