Ford Escape MPG: 2026 EPA Ratings, Gas, Hybrid and Plug-In
Escape fuel economy varies by powertrain: the 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter turbo, the hybrid or the plug-in hybrid. This guide lists the 2026 and 2025 Ford Escape ratings on fueleconomy.gov, the U.S. Department of Energy and EPA fuel economy site, read November 4, 2026, explains the plug-in hybrid label, and covers what can change the mileage you actually see.

What MPG does a Ford Escape get?
Fueleconomy.gov rates the 2026 Ford Escape at 26 to 30 combined mpg with a turbo gas engine, 39 combined for the Escape AWD HEV hybrid, and 40 combined on gas only for the Escape FWD PHEV plug-in hybrid, which is also rated 101 MPGe on electricity with 37 miles of electric range. EPA ratings are for comparison; your mileage will vary.

Escape plug-in hybrid: electric range and charging
The Escape FWD PHEV plug-in hybrid has two sets of ratings: one on electricity and one on gas only. Fueleconomy.gov lists:
| Rating | 2026 Escape FWD PHEV | 2025 Escape FWD PHEV |
|---|---|---|
| Combined on electricity | 101 MPGe (111 city / 91 hwy) | 101 MPGe (111 city / 91 hwy) |
| Combined on gas only | 40 mpg | 40 mpg |
| Electricity use | 33 kWh per 100 miles | 33 kWh per 100 miles |
| Electric range | 37 miles | 37 miles |
| Total range | 520 miles | 560 miles |
| Charge time at 240V | 3.2 hours | 3.4 hours |
From the Escape FWD PHEV records on fueleconomy.gov (U.S. DOE/EPA), records 49763 (2026) and 48663 (2025), and the side-by-side page for record 49763, read November 4, 2026. Fueleconomy.gov says this vehicle did not use any gasoline for the first 37 miles in EPA tests, but it may use gasoline depending on how you drive.
How to read the Escape ratings
The 1.5-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder with the Automatic 8-speed is rated 30 combined mpg with front-wheel drive and 28 with all-wheel drive. The 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, listed for 2026 with all-wheel drive only, is rated 26 combined.
The hybrid and plug-in hybrid use a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with an Automatic (variable gear ratios) transmission. Both are rated higher in the city than on the highway: 42 city and 36 highway for the 2026 Escape AWD HEV, and 42 city and 37 highway on gas only for the 2026 Escape FWD PHEV. Fueleconomy.gov shows the Escape AWD HEV as part-time 4-wheel drive.
On a plug-in hybrid label, the electric rating is in miles per gallon of gasoline-equivalent (MPGe), the number of miles the vehicle can go using a quantity of fuel with the same energy content as a gallon of gasoline. The gas rating is the fuel economy once the battery is emptied and the vehicle is using gasoline. Both are combined city and highway values, weighted 55% city and 45% highway. Charge time is for a fully empty battery on 240-volt service; lower voltage takes longer.
Fueleconomy.gov notes that plug-in hybrids do not have to be plugged in; they can run on gasoline alone but will not achieve maximum range or fuel economy without charging. It does not list a 2027 Escape; as of November 4, 2026, the 2026 figures above are the latest Escape ratings.
From the 2025, 2026 and 2027 Ford model listings, the 2025 and 2026 Escape records, fueleconomy.gov, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles: Learn More About the Label and fueleconomy.gov, Plug-in Hybrids, on fueleconomy.gov (U.S. DOE/EPA), read November 4, 2026.
What lowers real-world Escape MPG
EPA ratings come from standardized tests designed to reflect typical driving conditions and driver behavior. Fueleconomy.gov says the ratings are a useful tool for comparing vehicles but may not accurately predict the average MPG you will get. It lists factors including:
How you drive
Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) can lower gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic. Excessive idling also lowers MPG.
Cold weather and short trips
Your engine does not operate efficiently until it is warmed up, and in colder weather it takes longer to warm. Letting the car idle to warm up does not help fuel economy.
Roof cargo, towing and weight
Cargo boxes and other roof cargo add aerodynamic drag, and towing or carrying excessive weight lowers fuel economy. Test vehicles are assumed to carry only 300 pounds of passengers and cargo.
Terrain and speed
Hilly or mountainous terrain and unpaved roads can reduce fuel economy; the EPA test assumes flat ground. The tests account for aerodynamic drag up to highway speeds of 80 mph.
Maintenance
A poorly tuned engine burns more fuel, improperly aligned or inflated tires increase rolling resistance, and brake drag can make the engine work harder.
Fuel and break-in
Gasoline with 10% ethanol decreases fuel economy by 3% to 4%, and new vehicles will not reach their optimal fuel economy until the engine has broken in, which may take 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
