Driver Assistance Features Explained

Adaptive cruise control, collision warning, automatic braking and blind spot alerts are available on many vehicles. Here is what the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) training manual says each one does, and why none of them replaces an alert driver.

The short answer

Adaptive cruise control uses forward-facing radar to detect a vehicle ahead, forward collision warning alerts you to a potential collision, automatic emergency braking shows great potential for reducing collisions, and blind spot monitoring uses sensors or cameras to flag vehicles you may not see. They can help, but FHWA's manual says nothing replaces driver vigilance.

What each driver assistance feature does

FHWA's manual describes these safety technologies:

Adaptive cruise control

Uses forward-facing radar to detect a vehicle or other obstruction ahead. This helps mitigate rear-end collisions.

Forward collision warning

Identifies a potential collision and warns the driver.

Automatic emergency braking

Automated braking systems show great potential for reducing collisions, and NHTSA has endorsed automatic braking as one of its technological vehicle improvements.

Blind spot monitoring

Uses sensors or cameras to alert drivers when a vehicle is in their blind spots.

Adaptive headlights

Turn about 15 degrees, a range of 30 degrees, as the vehicle is steered around curves and corners.

Lane departure warning and prevention

One of the four crash avoidance technologies IIHS studied (below).

From the FHWA, Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operators Training Manual, Module 7: Driver Safety Issues, Lesson 5: Safety Technologies, read November 3, 2026. In 2015, the manual notes, 10 major U.S. car companies committed to making automated emergency braking standard on all vehicles.

The four systems IIHS singled out

The manual cites an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) analysis of four crash avoidance features: side view assist, forward collision warning and mitigation, lane departure warning and prevention, and electronic stability control. IIHS found that together they could prevent or mitigate more than one in four large truck crashes, one in three injury crashes and about one in five fatal crashes if every truck had them.

Those estimates are for large trucks; the manual notes the technologies are already available in many of the vehicles that escort drivers use. Of the four, IIHS found side view assist had the greatest potential for preventing large truck crashes of any severity. IIHS analysis also indicates forward collision warning could prevent as many as 31,000 large truck crashes a year, and lane departure warning and prevention up to 10,000.

From the FHWA, Pilot/Escort Vehicle Operators Training Manual, Module 7: Driver Safety Issues, Lesson 5, read November 3, 2026. Figures are IIHS estimates for large trucks cited by the manual.

Electronic stability control

The manual says electronic stability control (ESC) helps improve traction after a vehicle loses its grip on the road surface. It calls ESC the same technology that has slashed rollover crashes in passenger vehicles, and notes that a NHTSA rule finalized in June 2015 requires ESC on almost all new truck tractors from 2017.

Help with distraction and fatigue

The manual says crash avoidance technologies may help mitigate physical, visual and mental distraction, and that to some degree fatigue can be monitored with these technologies. For more on staying sharp behind the wheel, see our night driving tips and our guide on how to avoid road rage.

Stay in charge of the vehicle

The manual is clear that nothing will replace driver vigilance in collision prevention, though new technologies, and established ones placed in broader use, can further reduce collisions.

Our advice: check your owner's manual for which features your vehicle has and how they work.

Driver assistance features FAQ

What is adaptive cruise control?

FHWA's training manual says adaptive cruise control uses forward-facing radar to detect a vehicle or other obstruction ahead, which helps mitigate rear-end collisions.

What does forward collision warning do?

The manual says a forward collision warning system identifies a potential collision and warns the driver.

What is automatic emergency braking?

The manual calls automated braking systems a technology with great potential for reducing collisions, and says NHTSA has endorsed automatic braking as one of its technological vehicle improvements.

How does blind spot monitoring work?

The manual says blind spot monitoring and detection uses sensors or cameras to alert drivers when a vehicle is in their blind spots.

What are adaptive headlights?

The manual says adaptive headlights turn about 15 degrees, creating a range of 30 degrees, as the vehicle is steered around curves and corners.

Can these features replace an attentive driver?

No. The manual says nothing will replace driver vigilance in collision prevention, though new technologies can further reduce collisions.

What does The Works at Ford of Peoria include?
